Vivah Panchami is one of the most sacred festivals in the Hindu community. It is the most significant part of Ramayana. It is a celebration of the holy union of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita. As you all know, Lord Ram was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and the eldest child of King Dashrath of Ayodhya. On this day, Lord Ram arrived at Janakpur, the birthplace of Sita.
On Margashira Panchami he married Sita after breaking Lord Shiva’s bow during her Swayamvara. This is the reason the festival is observed. A divine way to immortalise the ritual and seek the blessing of Lord Ram and Sita. As per the Hindu calendar, this year i.e. 2023 it will be celebrated on 17 December 2023. The tithi will commence at 08:00 PM on Dec 16, 2023, and will end at 05:33 PM on Dec 17, 2023
According to Hindu tradition and mythology, back in time, Maharishi Vishwamitra requested King Dasharath to allow Ram and Laxman to guard his Yagna. Initially, he declines but later hesitantly agrees. Both the brothers go with Vishwamitra. After completing the Yagna, both the brothers along with Vishwamitra come to Mithila.
At that time, Mithila’s ruler Janak was organising a Swayamvar for her daughter Princess Sita. The participants of Swayamvar had to lift the break the massive bow, Shiva Dhanusha. Due to its immense weight, many were unable to even lift it. Seeing this, Vishwamitra asks Ram to do it. Surprisingly he broke it in two pieces.
Devotees around the country celebrate the festival with full enthusiasm and dedication. Vivah Prasang is recited that promotes a happy healthy marriage life.
